What is it?

Vimshottari Dasha is the primary timing system of Vedic astrology: a 120-year cycle divided among the nine planets, with the starting period determined by the nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth. It answers when, where the birth chart answers what.

How it's calculated

  1. Find the Moon's exact position and therefore its nakshatra at birth.
  2. The nakshatra's ruling planet gives the starting mahadasha.
  3. How far the Moon had already travelled through that nakshatra determines how much of that first period had already elapsed at birth.
  4. The remaining periods follow in the fixed Vimshottari order, each with its own set number of years.

Why it matters

A chart shows what is possible; the dasha shows when it becomes live. Reading a placement without knowing which dasha is running is the most common reason predictions sound true in general but never seem to arrive.

Frequently asked questions

What is my current mahadasha?

It depends on your Moon's nakshatra at birth and how much of that first period had elapsed. Enter your birth details and the full timeline with dates is calculated instantly.

How long is each Vimshottari dasha?

Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 — 120 years in total.

What is an antardasha?

A sub-period within a mahadasha. Each mahadasha divides among all nine planets in the same order, proportionally to their own dasha lengths.

Why does my dasha differ from another site's?

Almost always the ayanamsa or the birth time. A different ayanamsa can shift the Moon's nakshatra, which changes the starting period and therefore every date after it.
