What is it?

Narayana Dasha is a sign-based timing system from the Jaimini tradition. Unlike Vimshottari, each period is ruled by a rasi rather than a planet, and the length of the full cycle varies from chart to chart.

How it's calculated

  1. The starting rasi is the stronger of the Lagna and the 7th house, by the Jaimini sign-strength rules.
  2. The direction is forward if the 9th sign from the starting rasi is odd-footed, otherwise reverse.
  3. Each rasi's duration is found by counting from that sign to the sign its lord occupies, then subtracting one.
  4. A lord sitting in its own rasi gives a full twelve years.

Why it matters

Narayana Dasha is a genuinely independent second opinion on timing. Where it and Vimshottari agree, confidence in a prediction rises considerably.

Frequently asked questions

What is Narayana Dasha?

A Jaimini rasi-based dasha system where each of the twelve signs rules for a number of years derived from the position of its lord.

How does it differ from Vimshottari?

Vimshottari periods are ruled by planets and always total 120 years; Narayana periods are ruled by signs and the total varies by chart.

How is the starting sign chosen?

The stronger of the ascendant and the seventh house, judged by the Jaimini sign-strength hierarchy.

What about Scorpio and Aquarius, which have two lords?

The placement of Mars and Ketu, or Saturn and Rahu, decides. If both sit in the sign the period is twelve years; if one does, the count runs to the other; if neither, the stronger of the two signs they occupy decides.
