What is it?

Indu Lagna — also called Dhana Lagna, the wealth ascendant — is a special point in Vedic astrology used specifically for financial analysis. It is derived from the ninth lords from both the Lagna and the Moon, and is read as a secondary ascendant for questions about money, gain and accumulated resources.

How it's calculated

  1. Find the lord of the 9th sign from the Lagna.
  2. Find the lord of the 9th sign from the Moon's sign.
  3. Add their kala values (the 'planetary rays': Sun 30, Moon 16, Mars 6, Mercury 8, Jupiter 10, Venus 12, Saturn 1).
  4. Divide the total by 12 and take the remainder — a remainder of 0 counts as 12.
  5. Count that many signs from the Moon's sign, counting the Moon's own sign as 1.

Why it matters

The house Indu Lagna falls in, its lord's strength, and the planets sitting in or aspecting it are read together for wealth potential. It is a refinement on the 2nd and 11th houses rather than a replacement for them — which is why it is best read alongside the whole chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is Indu Lagna?

Indu Lagna, or Dhana Lagna, is the 'wealth ascendant' — a derived point in Vedic astrology used for financial analysis, calculated from the ninth lords from the Lagna and the Moon.

How is Indu Lagna calculated?

Add the kala values of the lord of the 9th from the Lagna and the lord of the 9th from the Moon, take the remainder on division by 12, then count that many signs from the Moon's sign counting the Moon's sign as 1.

Do Rahu and Ketu have kala values?

No. The nodes cast no rays and are excluded from the calculation. They also never rule a sign, so they can never be a 9th lord.

Is Indu Lagna the same as Hora Lagna?

No. Hora Lagna runs on the sunrise clock and moves through the zodiac twice a day; Indu Lagna is derived from the 9th lords and does not depend on time elapsed since sunrise.
